The Office of University Architects (OUA) is responsible for the development and management of the campus master plan, including transportation planning, historic preservation planning, environmental planning, and precinct planning; the development and management of campus site design and architectural standards; GIS management of existing conditions; and the coordination and project management of major capital projects for all of the UGA campuses across the state.

Position Summary
Monitor the day-to-day progress of construction projects assigned & perform inspections, document site conditions, project progress, and observations. Evaluates contractors' performance in regards to code requirements and the construction schedule and provides direction for corrective actions/additional measures needed for compliance. Decides if a construction problem raises to the level of requiring the work to stop until resolved and communicates the need to stop work with contractor. Project assignments may include renovations and/or new construction on UGA and/or UGA Athletic Association facilities.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Be proficient with e-mail and have the ability to manage electronic documents.
  • Be able to read contract drawings, demonstrate leadership and take initiative to address issues and opportunities that arise on the construction site.
  • Ability to plan and to prioritize work.
  • Be able to use Microsoft Word and Excel.
Physical Demands
  • Daily visits to project construction sites.
  • Subject to outside conditions and uneven terrain.
  • Will walk and maneuver around construction sites in various stages of development.
  • Driving as needed to perform job duties.
  • Be prepared to work standard work hours (8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday) but also to be prepared and available to work off hours or weekends as the occasion arises to accommodate special construction activities such as the inspection of concrete pours.

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Perform all inspections typically needed from an authority-having jurisdiction, such as foundation inspections, site piping and conduit inspections, framing inspections, in-wall overhead and mechanical, plumbing, fire protection and electrical inspections, certificate of occupancy inspections.
  • Visit each job site daily and record the job site conditions, any project progress and any additional observations noted. Document this information in a daily log that will be submitted at the end of each day to the REI's supervisor. Perform safety and quality inspections while on-site.
  • Photo document systems installations for future project management needs, such as for future renovations.
  • Attend every major construction event (such as concrete pours, beginning of steel erection, asphalt paving operations, etc.)
  • Ensure the construction work is performed in compliance with all applicable building codes. Communicate with the contractor regarding any work which is out of compliance and provide direction about the needed corrective actions. Determine if the problem rises to the level that work on site must stop until the correction is complete. In these cases, immediately communicate with the contractor when the work must stop and when the issue is resolved and work can re-start.
  • Keep the Office of University Architects' (OUA) Project Manager and Director of Construction apprised of all activities associates with the project.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Attend owner-architect-contractor/construction manager (OAC) meetings and all pre-construction meetings as requested by the OUA Project Manager.
  • Interface with UGA entities for projects requiring hot work permits, coordination of utility outages and building walk-throughs.
  • Assist the OUA Project Manager in coordinating with all entities involved in the project as necessary to coordinate the work activities, such as coordination with UGA-Facilities Management (FMD), UGA-Information Technology (EITS), UGA-Environmental Safety Division (ESD), AT&T, Georgia Power, etc.
  • Review the construction schedule and the progress to determine if work will be completed as reflected in the project construction schedule. If the work is falling behind, communicate with the contractor and provide direction re: how to adjust to put the work back on schedule.

  • Review contract drawings and specifications and be familiar with the project and its details so as to properly perform the inspections and quality control reviews.
  • Maintain a quality control log and have a complete understanding of the paperwork process for a complex construction project.

  • Assist in coordinating, scheduling and participating in the walk-throughs with the State Fire Marshal for the 80% and 100% building inspections.

  • Participate in OUA and UGA planning & implementation initiatives such as Lessons Learned, Strategic Planning, etc.
