Position Summary
The Audiovisual Technician is responsible to the Digital Archivist and Digitization Unit Head for processing digitization requests to promote preservation and access to archival audiovisual content. Duties include digitizing various archival film and video formats, generating and managing metadata, and encoding and editing the resulting digital files for web access or other delivery methods. The audiovisual technician must be able to manage the work on often short deadlines in a moderate to fast-paced production environment where careful, quality work to archival standards is paramount. Work is performed under general supervision following national and local standards and best practices.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Interest in digitization standards and best practices for archival audio and video formats

  • Familiarity with software applications that include, but are not limited to: FFmpeg, Microsoft Office suite, Google Drive, OpenRefine, and Airtable.

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment

  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment and handle multiple priorities

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

  • Ability to maintain accurate records

  • Effective verbal and written skills

  • Ability to work successfully in a detail-oriented production environment

Duties/Responsibilities

Processes digitization requests by:
  • Evaluating physical media and performing conservation treatment, as needed, in compliance with best practices, including baking, cleaning, rehousing media, repairing splices, etc.
  • Digitizing archival audio, video, and film formats in accordance with best practices
  • Ensuring best possible signal is captured by applying technical expertise to meet archival digitization standards and performing quality control on all digital files
  • Performing basic maintenance of digitization equipment and recommending more extensive repairs or maintenance when necessary

Processes requests for previously digitized content by:
  • Retrieving files from various file storage systems, including LTO tape and the ARCHive digital preservation system
  • Performing fixity checks and quality control on previously digitized files to ensure that legacy digital files meet current standards

Ensures complete fulfillment of Media Orders and Preservation requests by:
  • Monitoring queue of Media Orders and Preservation Requests and prioritizing requests
  • Meeting deadlines established by Media Orders queue
  • Digitizing content or retrieving already digitized files (detailed above), as needed
  • Re-encoding files to targeted delivery formats and specifications
  • Sharing files via cloud-based storage or physical drives and by uploading access copies to BMA website
  • Communicating with outside researchers and colleagues in a timely and professional manner, including seeking additional information when necessary

Ensures that digitized content is accessible by keeping accurate and detailed records, including:
  • Updating BMA's content management system with information about physical media and digital files in accordance with unit procedures
  • Updating systems used to manage Media Orders workflow with status changes and any relevant information about the digital transfer
  • Performing cleanup of metadata records, as identified by Digital Archivist, investigating errors, and making appropriate changes in content management system, Media Orders workflow systems, and/or other relevant systems.
